Art (and Love) on Atlanta's Beltline

The mural in these photos is part of the largest temporary public art exhibition in the City of Atlanta. When I first saw it, I knew that I wanted to shoot a couple near it.

The couple would have to be cute, quirky, funny, down to earth, and with a great sense of humor for this to work. When Shawnta and Brandon came along (thanks to google for helping them find me), I knew they would be the perfect couple.

Art on the Atlanta BeltLine invites residents and visitors to explore new segments of the Atlanta BeltLine that are lined with unique temporary public art installations.

The public art initiative selected new and returning artists to showcase dynamic installations and performances on the Atlanta BeltLine corridor, an emerging system of parks, trails, transit and development that reclaims a 22-mile loop of historic and mostly unused rail around the City’s core.

How's that for ~~sensationalism~~ a headline? Ha!

Thanks to the keen eye...and overindulgence in popular culture of a beloved My True Vision Photography fan (Thanks Ling!), it was brought to our attention that the Blue Satin Manolo Blahnik wedding shoes of Gingi Nixon photographed by Kari in our (Jamaica Destination Beach) wedding prep spread were ~~borrowed directly from the set of the Sex and the City Movie~~ originally featured in the Sex and the City movie.

After some serious google investigative reporting we found this information:

It was when Carrie Bradshaw in an episode of Sex and the City begged a mugger to take anything but her Manolo Blahniks that the shoe designer, already famous among haute couture circles, also became famous to mainstream shoppers. By the way, the mugger knew a good deal when he saw one and left taking only the shoes.

These gorgeous royal blue pumps played an important role in the Sex and the City movie… from helping Carrie Bradshaw feel at home in her new closet to bringing people together, the pumps were almost the 5th main character in the long awaited movie.

Covered in regal royal blue satin, it features a stunning crystal detail on the vamp which is encased in silver tone hardware. And they’re not just any pair of Manolo’s, they were designed especially for the movie.

You all may recall Chris and Gingi from their super dope: Hearts, Chocolate, Spraypaint, Love Engagement photo shoot back in March.

After their engagement shoot, Kari and I were geeked to be asked to travel with the couple to Jamaica to capture their "I Do's" in a lovely, private beach ceremony in Negril.

We are so happy for Chris and Gingi and are glad to share a few highlights from their big day.

The Evolution Project releases its new website!

You may recall from a previous post the BIG announcement about My True Vision Photography partnering with AID Atlanta, the Evolution Center, and Graphic Designer Chris Barker for one of two new media campaigns with AID Atlanta. (It was an image from the photo shoot for the first of those campaigns that ended up being the August 2011 Cover of GA Voice).

Since then the Evolution Project has released a mobile website, a facebook page, a blog....and now its new website.

It's been such an honor to be a part of this important work. Huge thanks to Chase Andrews, Chris Barker, Kevin Hatcher, and everyone at the Evolution Center for the opportunity.

They are the loving, sincere, artistic, compassionate, hilarious couple who along with some other radical, alternative, justice seekers make up a group we like to call "The Revolutionaries". Among this group of friends, you'll always be loved, challenged, pushed, uplifted, supported, forced to be honest, and encouraged to "Enjoy the Journey".

My True Vision Photography is proud to announce its partnership with AID Atlanta in the release of AID Atlanta’s new national campaign, From Where I Stand.

AID Atlanta’s mission is to reduce new HIV infections and improve the quality of life of its members and the community by breaking barriers and building community. Its new campaign, From Where I Stand, is set to be released in November in an effort to reach young black gay men and show that “the stories of young black gay men cannot be told through statistics.”

The AID Atlanta organization was formed in 1982 out of the devastation that occurred when the HIV/AIDS crisis reached Atlanta. However, what began as a small, grass-roots campaign quickly turned into the Southeast’s largest AIDS service organization. Since then, AID Atlanta has remained true to its mission.

The motivation behind AID Atlanta's From Where I Stand campaign came from a new study released Aug. 3, 2011 by the Centers for Disease Control showing a 48% increase in the number of new HIV/AIDS infections (2006-2009) among black men who have sex with men. (GA Voice Cover Story)

Upcoming Billboard Ad - From Where I Stand Campaign

Headed by Charles Stephens, the From Where I Stand campaign will consist of a website, coffee table book, billboard ads, and a documentary. Other members of the campaign team include: Clinton Jolliffi, Craig Washington, Steven Igarashi, Andre Toone, and Chase Andrews. For photographic images and the visual narrative of the campaign, they partnered with Carlton Mackey of My True Vision Photography.

Kari and Carlton Mackey are the husband and wife photography team who own My True Vision Photography. The couple believes in the power of art as a vehicle for positive social change. They utilize their company as an extension of their community and civic engagement. Carlton Mackey also serves on the board of directors of Wonderroot and is the Chair of the Ethics & the Arts Initiative at the Emory University Center for Ethics.

High School Senior Portraits Round 2

It was this time last year that I photographed my first High School Senior Portraits. Several weekends ago, I was fortunate enough to be able to do it again. Like the first time, I had flashbacks to when I had my senior photos taken. I remember going to the only portrait studio in my whole town. Mr. Jeffords had our entire high school on lock! If you had senior portraits made...he took them.

It was great to spend time with Mr. Hernandez. We first met in Piedmont Park when he came with a group of YTI scholars to participate in the Responding to Hate with Love Shoot. The YTI Summer Academy gathers thirty-six rising high school juniors and seniors from across the country to Emory University for a three-week experience in Christian theological education. For his Senior Portraits he wanted to come back to Emory for 'Old Time Sake'...and spend a little time on the the 'balance beams'.

Carlton Mackey Partners with AID Atlanta and Evolution Project for New Media Campaign

My True Vision Photography is so pleased to be partnering with AID Atlanta and the Evolution Center in its new media campaign. The Evolution Center, a project of AID Atlanta offers programming, refuge, and resources such as HIV testing specifically aimed at Atlanta Black Gay Men.

While reporting on data released by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) showing an increase in new HIV infection between 2006-2009, GA Voice reporter Dyana Bagby came to the set of the photo shoot for the media campaign at The Evolution Center. It was during this reporting that ultimately led to one of my photographs being the cover of the August 19, 2011 GA Voice.

I am so honored to be part of this important work and look forward to working with AID Atlanta on a new national campaign in a couple of weeks.

Atlanta Music Project Summer Concert Photos and WSBTV Feature

My True Vision Photography announced its year long documentary photography project with the Atlanta Music Project earlier this year.

Modeled on El Sistema, Venezuela’s National System Of Youth And Children’s Orchestras, the Atlanta Music Project is a 5-day-a-week, after-school, youth orchestra and choir program targeting underserved communities in metropolitan Atlanta.

Last month, AMP completed its Summer Program and celebrated with an outdoor community concert and barbeque.

Emory University student Derrick Montgomery had the opportunity to work with AMP through the D. Abbott Turner Program in Ethics and Servant Leadership Summer Internship. As Assistant Director of that program, I had the opportunity to work closely Derrick and to watch him flourish. Good job, dude.

WSBTV highlighted the Atlanta Music Project at the Summer concert in a recent episode of People 2 People.

I absolutely love clients who come to me after being referred to by a friend. It also means so much to have friends and family trust us to capture their precious moments.

But there is something mighty special about being "Googled" and contracted to do a session with no prior connection. There are sooooo many photographers out there with great work. To have Breanna and Ray single us out in the midst of a sea of other photographers means so much.

As you can tell from these photos, this couple loves each other and we were so fortunate to be able to spend some time with them.

Breanna and Ray originally met at STRIP in Atlantic Station and wanted to go back to the place where it all began to celebrate how far they've come. Special thanks to the management at STRIP for supporting their love...from providing the backdrop and atmosphere for their first encounter all the way to just before their "I Do's".

A Song (and a photograph) for Miles

Kari and I had the great pleasure of photographing the Russell Family a couple of weekends ago. The highlight of the shoot was certainly meeting the very charming Mr. Miles Russell. Miles' mother Dr. Tiffany Russell is the author of A Song for Miles, an interactive storybook released today and available on the App Store.

A Song for Miles takes children on a colorful and interactive musical journey. Through the lyrics of soul songs by artists like Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind, and Fire, and Marvin Gaye, children learn the meaning of determination, kindness, and love. Kids...They Grow Up So Fast

You may recall this adorable little boy from an earlier post. At the time I titled the blog post, The Cutest Baby Photo Ever. Well...we'll have to see what Mr. Isaiah has to say about that now. :-)

This was in August 2009. He and his wonderful parents were back in town and called on Kari and I for another family shoot. It was an honor. I hadn't seen little Felipe since these photos were taken. It took him a while to warm up, but by the end of the day we were besties once again.

Experiencing the glo is not a concept. It is as real as seeing the sweat bead up on Nicole Johnson's face and feeling your heart begin to race as if you were the person who just moved across the floor...body pulsating not to the rhythm of the music but to the rhythm of those heartbeats in the crowd now racing as they witness uniqueness.

It is as real as the pain you feel in the back of your leg when you see the smeared stain -the color of red roses on the back thigh of Virginia Coleman.

It is as real as your desire to be on the floor, arms stretched like a herring, feet as nimble as a baby's until you are indeed invited to join in.

This IS the glo.

This is what we experienced today.

This is what Isaiah knew instantly to be as real as the sound of his own laughter.

Here's a quick sneak peak at the Atlanta wedding Kari and I shot last month at the Catholic Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. This is the oldest church in north Georgia and Atlanta’s first Catholic Church.

It began to rain when I pulled up to the condo in Atlantic Station and continued to off and on throughout the day...and no one skipped a beat. As a matter of fact, we all chose to just sing in the rain. We were so honored to capture the love and the simple moments like this between Katia and Nikhil. My True Vision, is exactly like it says “True” To be exposed to this experience and treated like a celebrity was exciting. This was our second time around so we couldn’t wait for the appointment. The opportunity to have a say in how your pictures are shot, taken, and produced is something rare. Most folks pray that their pictures will come out okay, especially when you have no other options other than Olan Mills or the Mall. Coming into this, there are so many variables to consider that you can’t at all do at a commercial photo shoots. You have the option to change wardrobes, change backgrounds, use the outdoors, and change poses. From start to finish the experience was invaluable. After my cousins brought me up to speed on Carlton’s gift as a photographer, I was hooked. I had known prior to setting up any engagement photo sessions, that I did not want the traditional,” 1-2-3 smile”, photos. Especially with my fiancé not liking to be in front of the camera like that, we were going to have to go a different route, when it came to us taking pictures. After describing to Carlton, what I was looking for in a photo session and how also I wanted our pictures defiantly be different, along with being fun and exciting, he was able to take that information, and make our photo session the best day and most memorable day ever! On the day of the shoot, my fiancé and I did not know what to expect, but Carlton made my fiancé and I feel very comfortable, to point at times, I forgot the camera was even there.

The day was beautiful and relaxing. There was an extreme level of comfort for the most part and it was like the camera was not there. The photo shoot went so well, that my fiancé and I didn’t want it to end. Everything about that day was a blast! It was nice for my fiancé and I to let out hair down and just love on each other. My favorite part of the day, that made the photo shoot so epic, was the smile on my
fiancé’s face. It was one of the most priceless things that you could ask for. The feeling to express for the day of our shoot was one of the most priceless days, where it was just us two, no one else in the world, but me and my love.

Gingi and Chris, the pleasure was all mine. Thank you so much for allowing me to be there to be able see your love for each other.

A Letter To My First Born Son - The Most Important Photo I've Ever Taken

Hello Son,

You may never actually remember having this photograph taken, but I will cherish it for the rest of my life. In fact, it may be the most important photo I've ever taken.

It was the day of your dedication. Your mother and I traveled to the town I was born (which is not the town I was raised in), and in a ceremony led by your grandfather (Papa) and witnessed by your "Uncle" Josh, your Aunt Carla, your cousin Clay, your God Parents, your great grandmother, and a might cloud of witnesses, we publicly dedicated you back to God. The day was beautiful. At 79 degrees it was the warmest of the year up to that point. You were dressed in an all white one piece which, like so many of your other clothes, had been a hand-me-down gift...worn by another little baby boy just like you. I don't think that Courtney Mwangura even intended it for such an occasion, but she couldn't have given a better outfit for the day.

On the way to the church we passed the hospital where I was born. My mind flashed back to the few memories I had growing up for a few years in this town. I hadn't been here in quite a few years and the nostalgia was both comforting and unsettling at the same time. When we pulled up to the church Papa was standing outside to greet us. He flashed a big smile. He was wearing his black robe -the one he only wears on special occasions such as this. It was cute on him. I had to tease him. I rolled the window down. "Hey Prophet," I shouted. He dropped his smile in an instant.

"Get outta here boy!"

The service had already started. You could hear the drums and the keyboard and the voices all the way outside. You had never experienced the shoutin'-n-praisin' good time they have in these small churches before. Mamma and I did not think you would be able to handle it. We thought for sure the sound would cause you to fuss throughout the entire service. We could not have been more wrong.

When the doors opened, a gush of sound rushed out. Instead of flinching or showing any sign of discomfort, you smiled...and continued to smile for the rest of the service. Your biggest smile came when Papa led the dedication ceremony itself. You were all gums the whole time. As important as the day was, the audience couldn't stop grinning. Mama and I had a chance to address the congregation. We thanked them all. We reaffirmed our commitment to love you, to raise you to know God, and to instill in you (through example) morals and values to help you become a man of distinction -an upstanding, socially and spiritually conscience individual who will live life fully and who will commit to use your time, talent, and means to help others do the same. Of all of the people in the congregation, there was one who was the most proud. She sat quietly on the front row. She was the only other person wearing all white.

When we got back home everyone was very hungry. We all knew we were in for a treat. The woman dressed in all white had prepared a glorious spread the day before. Pots rattled as we placed them on the stove to be heated up. We were all about to change into more comfortable clothes when your mother reminded me to get a photograph of you with the woman she so affectionately calls 'Grandma Pearlie'.

I placed you in her arms...and there sitting before me was my first born son and my oldest living ancestor. Holding you so carefully was the woman who raised me as if I were her very own, the woman who made me sit at the far end of the kitchen table (with the TV off) until all of my homework was done, the woman who took me to Sunday School and church every Sunday morning, the woman who picked me and half of the neighborhood up from basketball practice in her Bonneville station wagon, the woman who prayed to God to give her the strength to let her live long enough to see your face. Holding you was your 81 year old great-grandmother Pearlie Lee Taylor.

In less than 1 second this image was captured. But what it symbolizes is timeless. Whether you are able to remember this day or not, you will forever have this photograph as a permanent testament. You will be able to know what Bill Whithers meant when he sang so passionately about "Grandma's Hands".

Isaiah, you are an answered prayer. On this day when you were dedicated back to God, God allowed your great grandmother on earth, your grandmother in heaven, and all of us to witness it. We continue to pray that God cover and protect you and that God grant us all -this village of elders, parents, and friends the strength to be able to nurture your growth and to know that you will continue this tradition of humbling yourself before God while at the same time leading with courage and compassion. May God's grace continually shine upon you. We love you.

My True Vision Photography is proud to announce its year long partnership with the Atlanta Music Project. On February 10, My True Vision Photography began the year-long photo documentary project with coverage of the Atlanta Music Project’s
2011 Winter Performance which took place at Museum Bar. When the project ends, in January 2012, the Atlanta Music Project will posses a digital photography archive chronicling the progression of the Atlanta Music Project youth, footage of major events, as well as professional portraits of each of the Atlanta Music Project youth along with portraits of Co-Founder and Executive Director Dantes Rameau and the Atlanta Music Project Teaching Artists.

Modeled on El Sistema, Venezuela’s National System Of Youth And Children’s Orchestras, the Atlanta Music Project is a 5-day-a-week, after school, youth orchestra and choir program targeting under served communities in metropolitan Atlanta. Founded in February 2010, the Atlanta Music Project is a tax-exempt, 501(c)3 organization whose mission is To inspire social change by providing Atlanta’s under served youth the opportunity to learn and perform music in orchestras and choirs.

The birth of Isaiah has made Kari and I even more appreciative of family and has inspired us to do more family portrait sessions. After sharing a poster announcing our 2011 Family Portrait Packages, my dear friend from college who I haven't spoken to in a while left a message on the My True Vision Photography Facebook page, requesting to book a shoot.

It was so good to hear from her. She scheduled an appointment immediately. It had been years since I last saw her son. Needless to say, Jayson is a big boy now...let's also just say BOYS WILL BE BOYS. It was my pleasure to photograph Raven and her family. Elegant Atlanta Wedding Reception...Priceless Words from a GREAT Friend

My husband and I had a destination wedding but held our reception celebration in Atlanta. When it was time to work on the photography details of the evening, I already knew I wanted Carlton Mackey as the photographer. Carlton is not only a co-worker but a friend. I am fan of his style of shooting and enjoy looking at his online photo albums. When Carlton and I sat down to discuss my true vision of our reception, I simply told him, I want you to be there as the photographer but get close enough to me, as my friend.
And that is exactly what he did. Carlton, my friend, was a guest at our reception and interacted with our friends and family. But Carlton the photographer had the camera on point, ready and captured those same family and friends hugs, smiles and good times.

When he showed me the collection of shots, I sat and stared at my computer for hours. It was like he showed me a part of my reception, I did not see. I kept asking him “when did you take this picture?” It was like I was able to replay that wonderful night, over again. Our pictures were like a docu-album. It told a story of love, family, friends and new beginnings and captured precious moments in time.

Make that A Barbie Visits the Candy Store Themed Birthday Party

If this little girl looks familiar it may because you recall seeing her in an Enchanted Forest near Atlanta Georgia. Each year, her mom goes to great lengths to conceptualize a theme and plan for her daughter's birthday parties. She's five years in now and has gotten pretty good at it! I always look forward to the call from her. I feel honored that she trusts My True Vision Photography to bring her creative ideas to reality.

This year, Zoya let it be know that she wanted a Barbie Themed Party...make that a Barbie visits the Candy Store Themed Party. When they arrived at our house Mom was carrying a Barbie box in one hand and a lollipop in the other. Both were cardboard and both were custom made with meticulous care by the master birthday planner herself.

With those two items as my starting point, I went to work. Thanks to a little help from Isaiah's newly painted bright green baby room and a lot of hand me down toys (that he's yet to be able to use) from friends and family, we created our very own toy store.

After a call to the good folks at Greene's Fine Foods we were off to the second part of the shoot. I can't wait to see what mom and daughter are going to think of for next year.

Love in the Garden - A Winter Wedding Engagement Photo Shoot

I got a text from Cynae asking about doing her wedding engagement photo shoot in the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. I had never photographed a couple there and was excited about the opportunity. After the first frame, I knew this shoot would be fun.

The love that Cynae and Jabu have for each other is quite obvious. Although it was freezing outside, they didn't need any time to "warm-up" to each other for the shoot. They took my advice to simply be themselves...and who they are is a young, fun, couple who is deeply in love and who made everyone they came in contact with....including Santa grin ear to ear.

Ultra Stylish Atlanta Wedding

Symphony and Sy Collins were ULTRA Stylish in their Atlanta Wedding at the Loft at Castleberry Hill. Their super chic attire combined with the fact that this would be the first wedding in 5 years that I would not be shooting with Kari meant that I would have to be on my A-Game. It also didn't help that their coordinator was Tiffany Berry, the bride whose now almost iconic wedding party photos on the ladders at Ambient Plus Studio were taken by Kari and I last year.

Makenzie Is One Adorable Little Girl.

I was delighted to hear that one of my best friends from high school and his wife were expecting their first child. Kari and I decided immediately the gift that we were going to give them. After a couple months of planning, Danny and Vee made the trip down to Atlanta. It was a wonderful to have them come down and spend some time with us. We laughed, ate, and kissed Makenzie all weekend...and then it was time to cash in on that gift. It was a gorgeous Sunday afternoon and we certainly made the best of it. I took a few photos in between rounds of mushing my face into Makenzie's cheeks.

High School Senior Portraits...Taking Me Waaay Back!

It's always a pleasure to be asked to do a family portrait session. Much of my early "training" (don't laugh) as a kid photographer came during family gathering. "Carlton, you know how work this camera? Take a picture of me and your Uncle."

After shooting his family a couple of years earlier, I got a call from Mr. Greg Pace to come back and take his son's graduating senior portraits. I was thrilled. "Senior Portraits? Wow...how long ago has it been since I did my senior portraits"?

When the shoot began, I kept thinking back to when I went to the ONLY portrait studio in town to take my portraits. Mr. Jeffords had the whole town on lock when it came to photography of any sort! Shooting Greg was like a trip down memory lane. I wanted to make the experience memorable for him knowing that I certainly still remember my own. He didn't want much. He quietly consulted with his parents between takes to see what they liked. I think I enjoyed the experience as much as they did.

When we came back to our studio for the CLASSIC male graduating senior portrait, I thought I was going to lose it. It was amazing to me...no matter how much things change, some things remain the same. I pulled out a black tux top, clip on bow tie, and ruffled shirt. He slipped them all on and left on his jeans and sneakers just as I had done (we all have done) years before. A couple of frames later, he too had joined the ranks of those of us who will be on our grandparents walls forever looking like and being remembered as the person from high school who (no matter what) we will always be proud of.

Vintage Inspired Atlanta Romance Photography

When one of your best friends comes to you to let you know that he's going to pop the question, your ears perk up. When he says that he wants to schedule a photo shoot as part of the "engagement festivities", your eyes widen. When you ask him the direction he wants to go with the shoot and he says, "do what you do", your muscles freeze up. No pressure, right.
About a week later, another good ole friend of mine named Bob let me know that he had a surprise for me. He had acquired a Welmy 6, a 1951 Japanese Brand Vintage Camera. I called Brooks and told him that I had an idea.
When he and Shakira showed up for the shoot they looked perfect! Considering I hadn't even told them the theme of the shoot, I was amazed by the outfits they chose.
I handed Brooks the Welmy 6 and told him that the theme of their engagement photo shoot would be a "Photo Shoot". Initially there was a puzzled look on their faces, but it didn't take long before they were in full bloom. Cameras in hand we headed over to a place that could certainly work with our vintage theme. The Atlanta Cotton Mill Lofts were built over a 40 year period beginning in 1881. The old solid iron doors, corrugated bricks, and original stair cases were the perfect backdrop. With the Welmy in hand, Brooks instantly transformed into a "professional photographer". As he gave Shakira instructions for mock poses, Kari and I quietly snapped away with our not so vintage Canon Camera.

Looking at these images makes me feel as if we teleported back in time to photograph something that actually is timeless -LOVE.

16 Years of Photography - The Best Photo I've Ever Taken

It was hot outside. The type of heat I remembered growing up in Blackshear, GA. Here we were...back in the town that I still call home. It was Saturday. Grandma was at the house preparing a meal that we would have the next day. Kari and I had just come from a walk. We went to the "track". It was the same circle of pavement that I ran track on in junior high that sat behind the same football field that my friends played football on in elementary school that sat right behind the building that I went to kindergartner in. They were all still there -worn by time, preserved by memory.

We were heading home when we passed a field on the right. I turned the car around, pulled over, and asked Kari if she would let me take some photos of her. I knew she didn't want to. She gave me that look. She was wearing workout clothes, she was sweaty, she wasn't wearing any makeup, it was hot. She reached around for the dress that was in the back seat. She reminded me of all the reasons (as listed above) this was not an ideal time for me to have a wave of inspiration. "Don't do any closeups. I look like crap." I smiled. "No you don't".

We got out of the car and took off our shoes. She began to walk across the field, looking back occasionally to ask me what I wanted her to do. "Nothing," I said. Macy, one of our dogs, darted in and out of the frame. "I feel like I'm not giving you much. What do you want me to do?"

"You're doing fine," I replied.

We hopped back in the car and I decided to press my luck. I headed the car in the opposite direction of home. I was looking for a road that I hadn't been on in over a decade. We drove and talked and after turning down a couple of dead end roads we found it. It was still the same -still unpaved, still bumpy. I was looking for an old barn that I had photographed in 2000. My teeth rattling from the bumpy road, I told her it wasn't there anymore. It had apparently been demolished so that this new property could be built. It was someones new estate, but fortunately they marked the property with an old-timey wooden fence.

We were heading home, but not without one final test. Heading back down the bumpy dirt road, I suddenly stopped the car. An image popped in my head. I looked at Kari once more and asked her to do the unthinkable. She hates for her feet to be sandy. I asked her to pretty pretty please stand in the middle of the road with her shoes off. She smiled. "You better be glad I love you".

She got out of the car walked slowly down the dirt road in front of me. It was here in this moment that my 16 years of photography experience have been leading me to. Standing in the middle of this country dirt road in Blackshear, GA was my wife carrying our son, Isaiah Carlton. I kneeled down and took the best photo I've ever taken in my life.

Beautiful Boulder Colorado Farm Wedding...Returning a Huge Favor

5 years ago Kari and I were in need of a big favor. After it became clear to us that our wedding photographer who had (let's just say) magically disappeared was not going reappear in time for our wedding, we called on a friend to help. Just two weeks before our wedding, Lewis got a ticket to Atlanta and committed to shoot our wedding. He literally saved our wedding. When we found out that Lewis was engaged to his gorgeous bride Brit, we gave him a call and asked if we could return the favor. We were so glad he said yes. Responding to Hate with Love

It was going to take more than the threat of rain to stop Josh Noblitt and those of us who have the pleasure of calling him a friend from coming to Piedmont Park yesterday. A group of friends, church members, artists, and families gathered in Piedmont Park in the exact same location where less than a month earlier Josh and his friend Trent were held at gunpoint and robbed.
A Social Justice Minister and a federal defender, Josh proved that he is just not all talk when it comes to his work or reconciliation and faith building. In an OPEN LETTER TO THE BELOVED COMMUNITY Josh understandably grapples with the nature of the event. He struggles to process the personal assault that he experience and the ongoing intolerance experienced by so many others. But Josh moves from simply processing this situation to the concrete faith decision to love.

SOUTH AFRICA, WORLD CUP, RECONCILIATION

Now that South Africa has the entire world’s attention, I've been reminiscing about my experience to this astonishing country. In 2004 I traveled with a small group of scholars, religious thinkers, students, and peacemakers to South Africa. We were a part of that year's Journeys of Reconciliation, an inter-religious program that gives members of the Emory community the opportunity to cultivate relationships of partnership, service and friendship with communities around the world. By visiting these communities and supporting their work of reconciliation, they open themselves to possibilities of hope and healing (taken from http://www.religiouslife.emory.edu/life/journeys.cfm ).

On this Journey we met with members of Parliment, visited the Apartheid Museum, met with students at the University of Cape Town/Wits University/ & University of Western Cape, went on a safari in Kruger National Park, visited an AIDS Orphanage, took a lift to the top of Table Mountain, visited Mandela's prison cell on Robben Island, visited Blaauwklippen winery, visited Soweto, flew to Johannesburg, spoke at a church (changed my life), and so much more.

The breadth of this Journey as described above (and all that was left out) correspond with the nature of this country. I learned quickly that South Africa is not a singularly-descriptive-entity. It is a country layered in history and beauty, struggle and triumph, culture and diversity, poverty and immense wealth. It is so many things to so many people yet there is one thing that seems to be the tie that binds. This tie is the spirit of the people.

There is something so difficult to describe in words but so empirically evident that you will experience when talking to anyone from that country. It is an infectious energy of pride balanced with an unrelenting measure of hope. It is evident in the voices and in the eyes of everyone you meet -in the streets, in the bars, in the schools, in the churches, in the square.

It is amazing to think that the equivalent of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States (which took place loosely from 1955 - 1965) had taken place only 10 years prior to my visit and less than 20 years prior to today.

Of course it would be foolish to assume that Mandela's election, twenty years without apartheid, or even winning the bid to host the World Cup could erase the reality of continued inequality, oppression, and injustice in South Africa. It would be just as foolish to assume that the election of Barack Obama, almost 50 years without Jim Crow laws, an Olympics, and a World Cup, could do/has done the same in America. But it is the hope for a better tomorrow matched with the will, determination, and spirit of the people in both of these lands that make the future as worthy of anticipating and celebrating as a goal scored in this beloved World Cup.

Being perfectly honest, Kye was not fully feeling the whole idea of a photo shoot at first. It was because something was missing. He needed a prop. When I handed him the umbrella from the flash, he came alive. Now this meant shooting the rest of the shoot without a very important tool, but hey this is Mr. Kye Patrick Davis.

Dr. Ellison came by my office after some deliberation with the Mrs. and confirmed that they'd like to book our services. It would be around the time of his daughter's fourth birthday and his wife's mother and grandmother would be in town. He stated that an image of these "four generations" would be important.

I went to bed and woke up the next morning with an image stuck in my head. I asked him if I could have some freedom to artistically express symbolically these four generations in a way that may not actually involve photographing their faces. He gave me the green light and this is what we came up with.

Congratulations to Billy and Cara. They had a beautiful Nashville Tennessee Wedding. When they weren't smooching in front of the church, they were all smiles as they celebrated their big day. It's great to be a part of wedding ceremonies where the friendship of the bride and groom is unmistakable. Their personal friendship and love was only part of the reason they were smiling. They were surrounded by two hilarious friends who love them. Mark and Ellen had us all laughing the entire day.

The entire day was beautiful. Friends and families united and we all smooched and smiled and danced Billy and Cara into their new lives together. We were glad to be a part of it.

They came over with my other God-son EJ and my "nephews" Mack and Trevon. We shot Sydney first...more from that shoot to come. At the end of the shoot, Jeff asked me to take a quick photo of all of them together. Tomorrow is EASTER, so I want them in their Sunday's best.

IMMORTALIZING MEMORY...

More than ever, I see my role as a photographer as more than a "picture taker". I am making a permanent investment into the lives of people who allow me into it. For the fourth time...4 times.. I've been asked by family, friends, or loved ones of the deceased for images to REMEMBER their loved ones by.

To be told, that an image that I took is the way that someone wants to REMEMBER a loved one who they will never see again is not taken lightly. It touches my heart. It helps me put things in perspective. It reminds me that this is not just a hobby or a business...it is a contribution to the world. Thank you for asking me, indeed for allowing me, the opportunity to make a permanent investment into your lives. I cherish each and every opportunity.

A DAY AT THE CITY FAIR

Yesterday I celebrated my birthday and received a tremendous amount of love from friends and family through Facebook messages, e-cards, snail-mail cards, phone calls, text messages, handmade gifts, jewelry from South Africa, lunch at Surin, vintage gifts, new clothes, a weekend at a mountain cabin, and a fabulous dinner with Carlton. I could not have asked for more and I am truly appreciative of the many forms of love shown by my nearest and dearest. And even though it's not always the best idea to single out a certain gift as the greatest or most memorable, there is one in particular I'm dying to share.

Right at midnight on the start of Monday, March 15th, Carlton received an email from our good friend and amazing photographer, Loni Schick. The email contained links to the photos from a shoot Loni did of me and Carlton just weeks before. Conceptualized by Carlton, executed, captured and made ridiculously fresh (edited) by Loni, these photos took my breath away. Loni captured the essence of everything that is the two of us: funny, serious, creative, artistic, playful, loving, funky, and downright silly.

Thank you Loni for being an incredible artist and an awesome new friend. Thank you Josh for the moral support during the shoot (and taking care of Disco Ernie). And thank you Carlton for determining the Atlanta City Fair as the one and only spot to make this all happen (and of course for loving me unconditionally through birthday after birthday). These photos started my 33rd off right!!

HOPE OR DIE

A couple of weeks ago I was surprised and honored to receive an email from Alex Rodriguez in reference to Belle the Magazine and Spira Sportswear's sponsorship of Jonathon Prince. He let me know that Jonathon would be in Atlanta for an interview with CNN. Alex said that when he heard 'Atlanta' and 'Photography' he thought of me and wanted to know if I was available to do a shoot with Jonathon to be used for website, press, promotional, etc. I was delighted by the opportunity.

As soon as Jonathon and I met and began to talk, I knew this shoot would be special. We seemed to have the same approach to the shoot and worked to capture images that would both highlight Jonathon as a runner, an athlete, and an activist as well as a fellow human being with hopes, dreams, and a desire to do what he can to change the world.

...and that is exactly what Jonathon is doing. Not only is he changing the world, but he is opening up something on the inside of the people who meet him and who hear his story to do the same. We laughed, we joked, we shared stories, and we committed ourselves to join our efforts to be the change we seek in the world. We would love for you to join us.

GREETED BY A KING

My friend Dan Keplinger was the guest speaker last night for Kennesaw State University's Chautauqua Lecture Series. Rightfully so, there was a big "to-do" about his coming. There was a formal reception before the event with a beautiful spread of hors d'oeuvres. Look...there were sliced apples in the punch, people. It was a beautiful, pleasant, dignified environment...for the moment.

I entered the building and could barely contain myself. I had never been inside this building and had no idea where the reception would be. My head was like an owl, swiveling around looking for the right place.

Then it happened. I peered around the corner and saw Dan from a distance. Before anyone knew it, Dan had flopped out of his chair and onto the floor. I heard a symphony of gasps and shrieks from onlookers. I broke through the clearly marked barrier. My hat flew off, my bags (including my camera) hit the ground, and for the next two minutes we rolled on the floor (LITERALLY) hugging, screaming, laughing. A crowd quickly gathered and camera flashes popped like lightning bugs.

After the screening of the film during the Q & A, someone said that they had never seen anything like that before and wanted to know what happened. As best as anyone could, Dena described the connection between the three of us. She then proceeded to call me on stage to reenact what happened. [I'm going to get you back, Dena!!]

Later that night while we were hanging out at Dick's condo, she said she hadn't seen him go that bananas since the Oscars. I told her I hadn't been that out of control since the night we went to the O'Death concert and danced in the rain at 3AM to Natalie Merchant afterwards.

I spent a lot of my time in Ghana just observing the beautiful people. There seemed to be a rhythm to their days. Each of their steps was a beat...the tempo was determined by the necessity of their tasks.

I wondered what was going on in their minds as they traveled. I wondered what music was in their hearts. I wondered what thoughts weighted heavily on their spirits.

I wondered what it would be like to walk a mile in their shoes.

SMILING IS A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE

My trip to Ghana five years ago was an extremely emotional one. I was fortunate enough to be able spend three weeks in Ghana (five weeks total on the continent). It was a trip of reflection, reconnection, and remembering (sankofa).

Kari's recent trip to Ghana and our conversations about it have opened up many of those emotions again. In the next few days, I will post images from that trip five years ago Many of them I've never released.

I'll begin with these images. In many ways they sum up the trip and the beautiful people who welcomed me.

Smiling is a universal language. We should all try to speak it more often.

ART IN UNEXPECTED PLACES - Bloom by Lauri Stallings and glo ATL

One of my students sent me an email inviting me to attend an event that he was helping with. In the email, he expressed such excitement and said that he knew without a doubt that I would love it.
...then he said where it was
...and I prepared how I would kindly tell him no thanks.

I don't do malls, and I had no desire whatsoever to be in Lenox Mall on Valentine's Day Weekend.

But this was Andrew Tate, one of the most engaging and enthusiastic students, and he made a convincing argument.

What I experienced was one of the most dynamic public, free, (kinetic) art exhibits I've seen in Atlanta. These dancers, who later I had learned had never practiced in this space, infused their bodies with everything in their environment.

Stairs were turned into piano keys. Escalators were suddenly lifting more than just people and their bags of very visibly marked commercial products. Actually the dark black metal stairs Croc catchers temporarily disappeared and people seemed to float on their own.

This space where the preoccupation with self and the drive for individuality is mocked by the somehow ignored reality that everyone inside looks like a carbon copy of the next was transformed. Suddenly an experiment other than commercialism was introduced and once injected (even if unknowingly) seemed to flow throughout the entire "body".

Some people accepted willingly and became a part of the art themselves. Others waltzed aimlessly and seemed to be aware of nothing other than their never ending string of text messages.

...and just like that they were gone
...moving spontaneously through the arteries of the space and disappearing without leaving a trace...or at least one may think.

But I beg to differ. I think that their energy was transferred, and the next time you are in Lenox Mall if you listen closely you can hear Mozart playing when you walk down the stairs.

V IS FOR VAGINA, VALENTINE, VICTORY, ...

...these were the opening words of a powerful woman who has been on a crusade to bring pride, awareness, and empowerment to women for decades. I had the great fortune of spending yesterday evening with Eve Ensler -the activist, the free thinker, the award winning writer of The Vagina Monologues.
For the third year, VISION Photography was the official photographer for the V-Day Atlanta Until the Violence Stops Annual Events. This year, I was honored to also be extended the invitation by V-Day Atlanta to be on the host/planning committee for organizing the entire event.

The evening started with a private dinner with Eve. This dinner was held at The Chelko Foundation. The setting was perfect for such an event. Special Thanks to Randi Layne and Ken Goldwasser.

The evening continued with a benefit concert at The Warren City Club in the Virgina Highlands with musical and spoken word performances by Roxy Watson, Arlington Priest, and Def Poetry Slam Poet Gina Loring. The event was hosted by Dres the Beatnik. Sup Dres? Special thanks to Kristi Warren.

The Little Princess (Part Two)

It was almost a year ago (believe it or not) when the mother of this little princess contacted Kari and I about capturing some images for her daughter's 4th birthday. She knew the party would be princess themed, and she knew that that she wanted the pictures that would be given as keepsakes to be special.

As the day approached we talked about ways to execute the shoot. At first, I proposed some areas near downtown Atlanta that might look "castle-like". At the last minute, I shifted my thoughts to trying to pull off an "enchanted forest" look.

Of course, the day of the shoot was colder than the rest of the week. We covered the princess in a big coat and took it off just as we began shooting. We literally shot for 15 minutes. I captured only 24 frames before we were headed back to the car. It was too cold. We finished the shoot in the studio and hoped that at least one of the images from the forest would work.

I don't think the princess was worried at all. She believes in magic.

LIVING JUST ENOUGH FOR THE CITY

Today is a beautiful day...and on this day I take a moment to reflect on the life of an extra-ordinary human being. Though Martin Luther King Jr. lived and died fighting for racial equality, his work transcended race. He fought for equality and justice on all fronts.

The global structures of class as reinforced by capitalism are complex. We are all caught in the paradox of both striving for success, wealth, and comfort while realizing that this ultimate pursuit of happiness may come at the expense of others.

I am working on a short documentary that I think will borrow the title of the classic Stevie Wonder track - LIVING JUST ENOUGH FOR THE CITY. This project was done collaboratively with my great friend and Atlanta artist Dane Jefferson. Accompanying the short documentary will be a photography exhibit.

I'll share three of them with you today.

I celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. today and hope that in some small way, this project honors his dream. More to come....
